Everyone says this is the time to do it. They’re not wrong, but it’s still not easy.
“Wow, how exciting!” they say. “What a perfect time to do it!” they say.
What a great time to decide to be a missionary, right? No husband, no kids, no one to answer to but myself. I’m young. I’m energetic. Blah blah blah.
See, while you’re saying that, here is what goes through my head. “I am already 25...”
I’m at that age where a lot of people—if they’re not already married or in a serious relationship—are finding that serious relationship bound for marriage. It’s the age where a lot of people are either fresh out of grad school or now have a great taste of the work world and are ready to jump to that next bar of the career ladder. It’s the age in which my oldest sibling is making the return to Chattanooga with his wife and kids to settle down.
It’s the age where I am just starting to feel in the groove with being an adult. I’m making strategic choices, I’m saving money. And I’m finding my niche for the stage of life I’m in: getting to a good place with my friendships, being involved at church, keeping a routine at the gym, etc. I’m just on the brink of being comfortable—not complacency—but comfortable. Like I finally have my bearings and am ready to excel, except—
“Hey, now is the time to do it!” Oh, that’s right. Now is the time to COMPLETELY FLIP MY LIFE UPSIDE DOWN.
Of course I am ecstatic to take on this new and unknown phase, and it is something I chose. But there are a lot of emotions involved, not just excitement, and I think it is important to bring light to the reservations that occasionally surface.
